Here at Of The Earth we strive to be as eco-friendly as possible. In fact, our founding company, Alara Wholefoods, was the first zero waste company in the UK!

The UK recycling rate is astonishingly still yet to hit 50%, meaning over half of our rubbish is ending up in landfills, causing more and more greenhouse gases to clog up our atmosphere!

As the saying goes ‘every little helps’, and something we like to do at Of The Earth is use special PET plastic to package our superfoods in.

PET is 100% recyclable and free of BPAs and carcinogens! Not only is it totally non-toxic and keeps waste to a minimum, but The Life Cycle Inventory found that ‘for every pound of recycled PET flake used, energy use is reduced by 84%; greenhouse gas emissions by 71%’. It does make us wonder why all plastic-packaging isn’t PET…?!

Anyway, we’ve come up with 4 fun ways to reuse our jars once you’ve emptied out all of the goodness inside.

1) Bird Feeder

Rather than forking out mega-bucks to buy a bird feeder, why not spend 5 minutes creating your own DIY version!

You will need:

  • Tall Of The Earth Superfoods jar
  • String/wire to act as hanger
  • Bird seeds
  • Thin cylindrical stick for birds to stand on
  • First, poke two tiny holes opposite sides of the jar, large enough for the stick to fit through, but small enough for the seeds not to fall out!

At the top of the jar, use a sharp point to make a further two holes on either side, to thread the wire or string through.

Next, poke a few tiny holes in the base of the jar for any rainwater to seep through.

Place the stick through the bottom two holes, and the ‘hanger’ through the top two, tying a tight knot to keep secure.

Finally, fill the jar up with birdseeds, place on a tree branch or window ledge, and let the birds come flocking!

    2) Breakfast Pot

For any keen bakers out there – this one’s for you!

Instead of using fancy-schmancy mason jars as kitchen storage, use your old Of The Earth Superfoods pots for a greener option!

Simply take the label off, rinse the pot out, and fill with your favourite granola or muesli!

    3) Plant Pot/ Herb Jar

Another one for the green-fingered of you!

    Standing Planter

After rinsing the jar out, place plant in the pot and voila – simple as!

    Hanging Planter

If you’re slightly more ambitious, cut out a large(ish!) hole on the side of your Of The Earth jar – this will be where your plant will grow outwards through.

    You will need:

  • Tall Of The Earth Superfoods jar
  • String/wire to act as hanger
  • Your favourite potted plant
  • If you plan to place your planter outdoors, prick a few holes in the base, (just as you would’ve for the bird feeder) allowing for drainage.

Finally, pierce two holes at either side of the neck of the jar where you can thread your wire or string through.

Tie a sturdy know and hang on a nail or tree branch!

    4) Desk Tidy

Always losing bobby pins? Find yourself short on cotton buds? Perhaps you can never find any pens?!

Our favourite way to re-use our jars here in the office is using them to organise all of those small, easily-misplaced goods!

For a minimal look, simply remove the label and you’re good to go!

Alternatively, if you prefer getting creative, a fun way to decorate your desk tidy is covering the jar with a collage using stickers, magazine cut-outs, photos and eye-catching Instagram snaps!

    Here’s our take:

We’d love to see your recycled jars in use! Whether you’re using one of our ideas above, or have come up with your own, tag us on Instagram or Twitter so we can check it out!
